Yikes!

What a day it had been.  They had seen, well, not only seen, but been part of something amazing.  Not a dog-flipping-over-in-the-air amazing.  Jaw-dropping, people will talk about this for millennia, amazing.

These 13 men had been seeking to get away from the crowds for a short time, but nonetheless, a group of about 5000 men, (not including women and children), found them.  The crowd wasn’t rowdy, but rather excited with anticipation of meeting one of the 13, Jesus of Nazareth.  They came with multitudes of ailments:  unable walk, digestive issues, boils, hives, pnuemonia.  You name it, most likely someone had it.  But they came, because they had heard that Jesus was able to heal their ailments.  They weren’t sure how, but they knew He could.

The day wore on and Jesus and His disciples, (and the crowd) grew weary.  There was brief discussion of how to feed this large group, but Jesus, the Rabbi, said to them, “Bring me what you have for food.”  So they did:  five loaves of bread and 2 fish.  You can almost hear their rebuke, “Rabbi, really, you want us to feed FIVE THOUSAND with that?”   Then Jesus responding, “Just trust me.”

Well, it turned that was more than enough, because they had several basket of food left over.  Wow!  They must have sat and scratched their heads in silence for hours after that.  Nonetheless, Jesus sent them off in a boat, while he went up into the mountains for some alone time with the Father.

Evening came, and Jesus made His way back down to the shore.  He could see the 12 in a boat far from shore, but struggling to make headway against the powerful wind.  They were struggling and probably Peter was directing them:  “Row harder! Row in unison!”  They rowed and rowed as waves broke over the bow.  “Look!” one of them exclaimed.  “There’s a ghost coming across the water!”  The rest of them gasped with fear, scrambling over each other.  “What is it?!” exclaimed another.  Just then a familiar voice came across the water:  “Do not be afraid!  It is I”

“Jesus?” one of them asked.

“Yes.” He replied.

Ok.  Jesus has just fed 5000 with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.  He then sent the 12 men off, most likely telling them He would catch up with them.  That must have seemed odd; maybe He was going to borrow a small boat and catch them?  Maybe He was going to walk to the next village and meet them there in the morning?  In any case, they disciples were expecting Him to follow the rules of nature, walking on land or rowing a boat on the water.  But Jesus threw them for a loop when He walked on water.  How is that even possible?!

What Jesus showed them is that He is part of the Trinity, the entity that created the world, the universe and all the physical laws that bind them.  And in being such, He is able to overcome or perhaps usurp those laws.
