Puzzles

On occasion over my many years I have enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles.  Regardless of the number of pieces to the puzzle, the purpose of each piece is to connect with other surrounding pieces to present a complete picture of something like a landscape, object, etc.

Many years ago, I read an article in National Geographic magazine about UPS (United Parcel Service) trucks.  The trucks were unmistakable with their drop-nose appearance and their solid brown color.  What was not so obvious, but equally as unique, was the internal engine parts.  In the days before computers, digital cameras, and internet which have greatly assisted in reducing thefts, other measures were needed to prevent theft.

Over the decades, automobiles have received better and better security features to prevent theft.  It wasn’t until the 1970’s that the hood release was moved from the front of the car into the interior behind lockable doors, so that thieves couldn’t easily steal the vehicle’s engine.  Then in the 1980’s alarm systems started to be installed in cars to alert the owner that someone was breaking into the car.

In that same timeframe, UPS, wanting to prevent theft of their trucks, had the engine designed so that the parts would only fit their trucks.  The pistons and cylinders in engines of nearly all other vehicles are circular;  but, the pistons and cylinders in the UPS trucks were oval, making them of no use to anyone other than UPS.

These pistons worked with the other components of the engine and drivetrain to move the truck.  Like the jigsaw pieces, they had unique features that, only when combined with the other components would complete the engine.

Whether we recognize it or not, we are all like the puzzle piece or the oval pistons.  We have been gifted with unique characteristics so that, when we connect with others, we may be of help to them and others in their community.  Psalm 139:14 tells us this:  “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.”  (NKJV). God made us individuals to His design and for His purpose.  Notice the psalmist says “Marvelous are Your works,” where works is plural.  In God’s plan we are all like those puzzle pieces; we are unique and fit into His plan for His purpose.  And, just like the engineers who designed the pistons and cylinders of the UPS truck engine to be part of UPS’s theft prevention plan but accomplish the feat of moving a multi-ton vehicle, God’s desire is for us to work with His people to be a part of His plan to bring the message of eternal life to the world.
